Candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Mrs. Abbey Ukpukpen, has won the Saturday’s Obudu State Constituency bye-decision into the Cross River State House of Assembly, NAN reports.
Mrs. Abbey Ukpukpen, widow of a previous member of the state assembly, Stephen Ukpukpen, who kicked the bucket in May, stunned her nearest match, Ishamali Bendel, of the All Progressives Congress (APC), to win the distinctly challenged bye- election.
Mr. Ukpukpen’s seat was proclaimed empty after his passing.
The State Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC), Dr Frankland Briyai, declared the outcome on Sunday in Obudu, Headquarters of Obudu Local Government.
As per Briyai, the PDP competitor scored 12,712 votes to beat her nearest equal, Mr Ishamali Bendel, of the All Progressives Congress (APC), who scored 4,345 votes.
Different outcomes included: Awafang Angiating of Mega Party of Nigeria (MPN), who scored 132 votes and Agwupuye Umeka of African Democratic Party (ADP), who scored 114 votes to put third and fourth, individually.
“Add up to esteemed votes 17,303; rejected votes 607;
add up to votes cast 17,910; add up to number of enrolled voters 69,908, ” he said.
The REC complimented the electorate for the tranquil lead of the activity and encouraged them to recreate a similar mien in the 2019 general races.
Mrs Abbey Ukpukpen, a staff of the University of Calabar, will now replace her late spouse in the state assembly.
