The Etum Numana, Mr Gambo Makama and his pregnant wife were reportedly killed in Arak, a village in Sanga Local Government area of Kaduna state.
The attackers reportedly stormed his home in the first hours of the new year.
Makama, who was one of the second-class traditional chiefs in the southern Kaduna district, had traveled from his palace to Gwantu, to his village, Arak, to celebrate new year with his second wife when the incident occurred.
A source in Arak said that the armed men who covered their faces with masks entered the house and started firing, killing him and his pregnant wife while injuring his other son who was nearby.
The armed men after killing the chief and his wife also set the house and his car that was parked in the premises on fire before they fled.
The chairman of Sanga Development, Prince Bala Audu, who spoke of the incident on the phone, said that it happened a few minutes after midnight.
“He was sitting with his second pregnant wife, and suddenly, armed men,with their faces masks, invaded the house and opened fire on them, alongside his son who is about 45 years old.
“The chief and his wife died on the spot, the son is not dead but he was badly injured and was rushed to the hospital.
“Armed men set the house on fire and burned a vehicle that was recently given to the chef as a gift.
“Immediately they committed the cowardly act, they fled into the bush and escaped,” he said.
Kaduna State Police spokesman Aliyu Mukhtar confirmed the incident.
“We got a distress call about 4am that armed men stormed his house and shot him with his wife. Before our arrival to the house, the hoodlums set place ablaze and fled. We were not able to arrest them but we are intensifying efforts to ensure that,” he said.
